No country for old men

A Movie Review
Wow. This was a great movie. I always enjoy a movie that gets you thinking about things on a level you are not used to thinking of things on lol, if that makes sense. This is one of those movies. Very well done, let me tell you a little about the beginning of the movie here.

It starts out with Tommy Lee Jones narrating that he is a sheriff and it shows scenes from Texas, the desert and he is talking about how times are changing. Basically saying that crime is worse, people have no morals and the whole world seems to be going to hell in a hand basket and he just can’t understand why. Then the scene shows a deputy in the desert and he has this guy who is all dressed in black handcuffed with his hands in the back of him and he’s putting him in the squad car. He takes this offender into custody and gets him to the county jail. There he makes a phone call, and calls his boss, Tommy Lee Jones. He is on the phone explaining that the guy was caught with an oxygen tank that had a hose attached, while you can see the fellow in the back ground slipping his cuffed hands under his legs and over to the front. Then this weirdo starts creeping up behind the unaware deputy who is still talking on the phone. Right when the deputy says he has everything under control and hangs up, the offender wraps the cuffs chain under the chin of the deputy and proceeds to choke him to death. Which he does but it takes a realistic 5 minutes of a choking scene for him to do it. It was done quite well if you ask me. You really get a sense that the offender is a right crazed lunatic. Later on, we will come to find out his name is Antwon Sugare. So now Antwon is loose. Antwon makes his way to the highway in a squad car and pulls over the first motorist he sees; a middle aged business man type. He gets out of the car and he has what looks like an oxygen tank with a tube and nozzle attached to it. He approaches the citizen and tells him to step out of the vehicle. I don’t understand why the citizen listened, because Antwon was looking all crazed and clearly he wasn’t dressed in a policeman uniform. He kind of looks like a young Roy Orbison, same haircut. Anyways, the unfortunate business man gets out of the car and Antwon asks him to hold still while he aims the nozzle at his forehead and blows a hole in it. Now he has himself a new vehicle.

Next scene: we have a regular looking cowboy Mexican dude who is in the desert. He is hunting for some caribou I guess is what it looks like. So he is on this ridge and he is aiming his high powered scope rifle at this heard and he takes his aim and fires. BANG, it looks like he hit one! But they all run off. So with a sigh he heads over to where he shot. He finds a bit of blood and realizes he only wounded the animal. Looking over yonder he sees something off in the distance and using his scopes recognizes it is a wounded pit bull. Hmm interesting. He follows it. He gets to a ridge and looking down into a ravine like area he can see 4 short box pick up trucks and what looks like the aftermath of a shootout. There are several bodies lying about. He heads down there and checks things out. He finds a bunch of dead men, cause of death is clearly bullet wounds, and finds one barely alive in one of the trucks. He asks him where the last man standing is, and the near dead man asks him for some water. The Mexican tells him that he has no water and goes and looks in the back of the truck. There is a tarp and when he lifts it up he sees the entire area is filled with blocks of white powder. Now he looks around. As a viewer you have to be smart enough to know he wants to know where the last man standing is, because most likely he will have the money. As clearly there was money involved in this little scenario. So the Mexican heads out into the desert looking for him, and finds him dead near a tree not to far away. Clearly he died from the bullet wounds he got from the shootout. There is a huge black attaché case near him and when the Mexican looks inside, he finds it is filled with blocks of cash, he assumes it is to the tune of around two million dollars. He takes it and starts his long trek through the desert back to his car, and then back to his crappy trailer park unit with his simple wife. When he gets home we find out his name is Lou Ellen. He tells his wife that he just found a bunch of money and seems happy. Next thing you know, it is a bit later on and he is filling up a 4 liter just of water and saying he has forgotten to do something. I guess he felt guilty about leaving the near dead guy at the shootout scene without any water.

He goes back there and it is now dark. Leaves his truck parked up on the ridge and goes down on foot. He gets to dead guys truck with the water and dead guy is not in the truck anymore. The drugs don’t seem to be in the back either, and now there are lights of another truck up near his own truck. He hides behind a tire and watches. The bandits up on the ridge shoot out the tires on his truck and then getting into their own 4 wheel drive, head down towards him. He starts running. They see him and start after him until they run him over this edge and he falls into water rapids. They send a dog after him, one of those pit bulls the drug dealers are using in this movie. He gets ashore and just has enough time to shoot the lunging dog in the head.

So now he knows drug dealers are after him for that money. Antwon lands up being the guy who is the leader of this out fit so Lou Ellen has to deal with him as well. Woody Harrison is hired to help the police track down this Antwon character as it seems he is internationally known. This movie has great dialogue, great acting, lots of action, blood curdling gun wound cleaning scenes, and a psychotic mental killer of a level that is near incomprehensible. Antwon makes jigsaw look like a good guy. Don’t miss this one!
