I was about seven years old I guess and it was summer vacation. We would wake up early and go outside, where we would play all day only coming back home for food or drink as we needed it. I played with my older sister all the time, and sort of tagged along where ever she went and did what ever she did. She is 2 years older than me so that would have made her around 9 years old.
This one day, we were out playing, and we went down near the end of our street and across the *busy* street (which we were not supposed to do) and continued on towards the very, very end of our street that ended at the river. The closer you got to the river, the more desolate and destroyed the houses lined up on our street became. As we were walking, we noticed that one of the houses now had boards on the windows and had been *boarded up* My sister wanted to go in there, and I said.. No way. I was a nerd kid LOL… I wouldn’t go in the house with her, and we eventually found ourselves back home for some lunch. One of my mothers sisters was visiting when we got home for lunch and she had her son with her, our cousin, who is another 2 years older than my older sister. Now he is going to come outside and play with us.
I remember thinking. Oh great, now she is going to want to take me past that busy street that I am not supposed to cross, and probably into that boarded up house that I know we are not supposed to go into, and sure enough that is exactly what happened.
We crossed the street, and we went towards that old boarded up house. My sister was clearly feeling brave that she had a boy who was two years older than us with us, and she was bossing him around and telling him what we needed to do. Apparently, they needed to go inside this house, and set it up like a haunted house for me. I would wait out side while they set up the “haunt” and then they would call me in when they were ready. Why I agreed to this, I can not tell you. I must have been insane as a child. *laughs*
So, I don’t know how much time went past but these two were not calling out to me to tell me the haunt was ready. I eventually got tired of waiting and I started to head home. As I began walking back down the street away from the river, (the boarded up house was the 2nd house from the end of the street) All of a sudden I heard…………… Werrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeee Reaaaaaaaaaaaaddyyyyyyyyy ooooooooohhhhhhhh All ghosty like and then I knew the haunt was up. I remember thinking, damn it I almost got away. Instead, I turned around and trotted back towards the house. I went in through the back window to the basement, through a board that we had kicked off (well hell, I guess this was breaking and entering eh? hehe) We didn’t think of it that way though, as no one lived there. But we knew it was wrong for us to be in there. That was clear. When I got inside, the place was really, really dark. Why I thought there would be light inside a boarded up deserted home in the middle of day I did not know. That’s what happens when you are young like this. You really don’t think of everything and you just go for it. I was like that when I was younger anyway.
I immediately got freak’en scared of the dark and called out loud, “I’m not playing, I’m going, it’s too dark and I’m scared.” Then my sister called from somewhere inside the house. “Oh come on now sucky wuussyyy.. You know its us, just come in and see the surprise we have for you.” So, having now been challenged, I headed up out of the basement and went into the main area of the house. It was a little brighter up there, as light was able to seep in through the cracks in the boards on the windows. I could hear something creaking around from upstairs and heard giggling and I knew they were getting ready to jump out and scare me. I prepared myself and went to stand near the front door and just wait them out. I was scared again, and I wasn’t about to go wandering to the upstairs. It was very dark, and I wanted to stay near the semi-light i was getting on the main floor.
My sister called again, “are you coming? C’mon scardy cat.” I stood quietly and decided I would freak her out instead. I knew that if I became quiet and just stood in the shadows by the front door she would start to worry if I was okay, and she would come down, and we could get the hell out of that house. It was then that I started wondering what had happened to my cousin because I hadn’t heard him at all since getting inside the haunted house. I figured he was the scarer. She was trying to lure me, and he was going to jump out and scare me. Well, I wasn’t about to let that happen. I waited.
Time went by. She kept calling me and I kept not answering. Finally she said, “Josh,, I think she left.” There was no answer from cousin Josh. Then I heard movement coming from upstairs and I heard my sister calling both our names now and starting to sound a little panicky herself. Clearly she had stuffed herself into something upstairs that she was trying to get out of. I could hear things moving, being knocked over and her grunting and still calling for us. I stifled a giggle. This was more fun than I thought it would be. I slinked back further into the corner by the front door where I was standing.
My sister started calling again. “Excuse me. Guys? um,, I am stuck.. can someone come and help me get out,, this board is stuck on me.” I almost giggled again, and wondered if she was setting up a trap. She was pretty crafty and I knew her well, as I had spent every waking moment of my young life up to that point looking up to and admiring her. I continued to wait and said nothing. I remembered that she now thinks I have left, and knowing what a wuss I was myself, it is what I would normally have had done by now. But I continued to wait.
“Josh she cried again.. Okay Josh. This isn’t funny. I am stuck and you need to come and help me. Nothing from Josh. Now I started to worry again.. where was he? My sister started getting panicky and all of a sudden started flipping out and screaming. “You Asses!!” she yelled. “You left me here!” “Moooooooooooooooom.. Hellllllllllllllllllllllp, Somebody Help me. I’m Stuck!!” she cried at the top of her lungs. Now I felt sorry for her and when I sensed that this wasn’t an act and she was really scared, I broke out of my hiding spot and I yelled. “Hold on I’m coming!” and I barreled my way up the stairs to save my sister. I did not try to think of the dark stairwell I was running into. I did not try to think of the pitch blackness that I was entering. I was trying to find her by voice only. I could see nothing but she was calling me still. “I am in here” she said all wimpy like. I slowed as I got to the top of the pitch black stairs and I said. “Where are you.. say something.. I can’t see anything. I used the wall to feel my way along the darkness.
There was a door at the end of the hallway and I knew her voice was coming from there. I crept along all the while telling her that it was going to be okay. I was going to get her and help her. She replied by saying. “Hurry.. It hurts,, I need help with this board.. it fell on me.. I can’t move.†I made my way to the door and pushed it open. Light from the cracks on the boarded windows shot through and almost blinded me. As my vision adjusted I looked around the room with its pieces of broken furniture strewn about and could not see my sister. Panic filled and I turned around.
There she was, standing right there in front of me with her eyeball lids flipped back so her eyes looked red and she screamed, “Raaaaaaaaaaaarrrr rrrrwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.” My heart stopped for a second. All the hair all over my body stood on end, adrenaline rushed to my heart to start it up again and I screamed as loud as I could, *AAAAAA AAAAAAAA AAAAAAH” and she started laughing at me. I pushed past her in a panic and ran down the stairs to the main floor. I could hear her chasing me and all I wanted to do was get home to tell my mom and dad on her so she would get in trouble, screaming and crying all the way.
“Stop!” she yelled. “Stop it’s me, its okay.” Clearly she knew she had freaked the hell out of me. I didn’t know how to get out of the house other than down through the basement again, and out the window in the back so that is where I ran.
When I got to the door the dark stairs hit me like a brick wall and I stopped. Heart racing and out of breath, and with my sister now just catching up to me I decided I wasn’t going down there. I turned to her and she grabbed and hugged me close while I was still crying from pure fear and fright. She hugged me, giggling and snickering, trying not to laugh while we stood in that deserted house’s hallway and told me she was sorry.
It was then that I pulled away from her. Once I had received my apology and having regained some of my composure. I whispered to her, “Where is Josh?” We both looked at one another and that is when I saw something moving on her head. “Um” I said as I backed away from her and pointed to her head. She moved closer towards me and I guess she saw the look in my face because she was suddenly very concerned. “Um, I stuttered still pointing to her head. My sister reached up and having just touched the first spider she picked it off her head nonchalantly, like a monkey picking lice, and bringing her hand down into the light slowly to see what she found, the look of sheer terror covered her face. Realizing it was a giant hairy spider she screamed. Louder than either one of us has screamed previously, and now jumping up and down and screaming and brushing her hair as spiders flew off her head, we both bolted for the basement to get the hell out of that house.
Panicked and adrenaline fired up again, we ran down into the dark basement. When we got to the bottom of the stairs, some light came in from the busted board on the window that we needed to get through and we ran for it. Before we could get there, crazy Josh who we had completely forgot about at this point, all of a sudden appears hanging upside down from the ceiling with his eyelids flipped (like my sister taught him how to do, she was famous in our neighborhood for flipping her eyelids) as well as what seemed at least 2000 spiders moving and wriggling all over his head. ACK! We screamed anew and pushed past him scared half to death and scrambled our way out through the basement window. My sister and I were jumping up and down in the back yard (happy to be back in the light) and trying to brush spiders off of each other when Josh finally crawled through the window. He was also brushing spiders off him self, but in a cool boy way. Not scared and actually picking them off and just tossing them to the side like they were not hairy, wriggling and scary as hell.
Once we had all the spiders off of us. We all seemed to have been able to calm down a bit and that is when we started laughing so damn hard that we cried. The three of us fell on the ground we were laughing so hard. We eventually pulled ourselves together and headed back home.
When we got back there, the parents were in a huff. Josh’s mom had been waiting to leave for hours and they already had a search party out looking for us. It seems that we were gone for over five hours!
All that time we three sat in that house, waiting out the others, while hundreds of spiders made there home on us, time was going by and we could not tell.
We got in trouble, and landed up telling our parents where we were and what we were doing. This is my first experience with spiders. I don’t like spider much to this day and I do believe, it may be my sister’s fault. hehehe
